'Popular' Receives Animal Rights Accolades Fri, Mar 9, 2001 Zap2it.com

An episode of "Popular" titled "Joe Loves Mary Cherry" has received a Genesis Award, a distinction that "recognizes members of the major news and entertainment media for spotlighting animal issues with courage, creativity and integrity." The episode of the WB comedy questioned wearing leather and eating red meat. It's not the first time "Popular" has protected the animal kingdom, however irreverently. Last season, a resident activist tried (in vain) to prevent Mary Cherry from killing and eating a giant lobster. It was honored as Best New Television Series at last year's ceremony. The 15th Annual Genesis Awards took place March 10.
